The Sutherland Hospital School's History

The Sutherland Hospital School was established in 1965 by the Department of Education for the continuing education of sick children and opened by the Minister for Education, Mr E Wetherall.

The Sutherland Hospital School is a K-12 facility providing educational services within the Children's Ward of Sutherland Hospital for children from 5-18 years. The students are predominantly from southern Sydney and are hospitalised through illness, accident, disease, trauma, for medical procedures and for psychological or social reasons. Children attend the Hospital school on a daily basis for periods ranging from several days to several months. The school aims to provide continuity of quality education to school students who are hospitalised whilst offering support to students and families and ensuring a smooth transition to regular schools.

The Sutherland Hospital Schoolroom is well equipped with a mini library, a computer lab, teaching resources for both Primary and High School students, a Creative Art program, extensive craft activities, puzzles and Mathsgames, musical instruments, DVD player, projector, Nintendo Wii for sport, 4 iPads and our very own skeleton 'Bucky'.

Students work on individual projects and in group situations. Students can attend the Schoolroom or work can be taken to their hospital room. The school modifies learning programs to suit the individual.

School staff collaborate with the Health Care Team to ensure optimum educational and health outcomes.
